Highlights from the M3NIR 9th General Meeting in Vienna, Austria

December 10–11, 2025

The M3NIR consortium convened in Vienna, Austria, for the 9th General Meeting (GM9), hosted at TU Wien. Held on December 10–11, 2025, the meeting brought together partners from across Europe to review project progress, coordinate ongoing technical work, and prepare for upcoming project milestones and review activities.

Across two days, the consortium engaged in in-depth discussions covering project management, technical development, and system integration. Updates were presented on the status of objectives, deliverables, and milestones, alongside short-term planning for the next project phase and preparations for the upcoming Project Review.

A substantial part of the agenda focused on technical progress within WP4 and WP5. Partners reviewed advancements in the development and fabrication of key structural modules, including passive and active Ge-on-Si and Ge-on-SOI photonic integrated circuits, quality-control chip assembly, hybrid integration, packaging solutions, thermal management, and tailored microfluidic components. These discussions ensured alignment between component-level development and system-level integration across the platform.

Dedicated sessions addressed progress across all three M3NIR use cases. For Use Case 1, discussions covered the integration of quantum cascade lasers, miniaturized electronics, drone-based sensing components, and data analysis workflows for greenhouse gas monitoring. Use Case 2 focused on the miniaturized liquid analyzer, including spectroscopy set-ups, enrichment layers, microfluidic integration, and the use of real-world datasets. For Use Case 3, partners reviewed developments related to breath analysis, including hollow waveguide integration, electronics development, and data analysis approaches.

The meeting also included a session on dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities. In addition to reviewing ongoing and planned dissemination actions, the consortium participated in an interactive session on intellectual property management led by an external IP expert. This session provided practical guidance on IP protection strategies, patenting considerations, and exploitation pathways, supporting partners in strengthening the innovation potential of M3NIR results.

GM9 concluded with a laboratory tour hosted by TU Wien and a summary of agreed next steps, reinforcing collaboration and coordination across the consortium. The discussions in Vienna contributed to maintaining momentum toward system integration and the successful delivery of the M3NIR platform.

The consortium thanks TU Wien for hosting the meeting and all partners for their active participation and constructive contributions.
